BEAMLINES

JAEA owns two contract beamlines (BL22XU, BL23SU) at SPring-8, the world's largest third-generation synchrotron radiation facility, located in Harima Science Park City, Hyogo Prefecture.
These beamlines have been used by external researchers as shared facilities. By becoming the implementing agency for the Advanced Research Infrastructure for Materials and Nanotechnology in Japan (ARIM), we will further enhance support for external users.

BL22XU:JAEA Actinide ScienceⅠBeamline

Scientist in Charge Dr. Hajime Tanida, JAEA Assistant Principal Engineer
Second - in-charge: Dr. Tohru Kobayashi, JAEA Assistant Principal Researcher
Nearest Entrance Storage Ring building entrance B4 or RI Laboratory building main entrance
SR Source In-vacuum undulator
SR Energy 5-70 keV
Monochromator ・ Cryogenically Cooled Calculation and Combination Type Double Crystal Monochromator with Si(111)
・ Cryogenically Cooled Single Cam Type Double Crystal Monochromator with Si(111) and (311) Crystals Switching System*

* The monochromator crystals of the single cam-type double-crystal Monochromator can be switched at any time.
Characteristics High-intensity synchrotron radiation with a wide energy range from approximately 5 keV to 70 keV is available. Using the (311) plane enables high-energy-resolution measurements. It is equipped with X-ray mirrors and beryllium refractive lens focusing optics. In addition, the experimental hutch is located at an optical distance of 120m from the source point which enables speckle and imaging measurements. Furthermore, BL22XU is a beamline led to the RI Experimental Building, and RI and actinides can be used after completing the necessary procedures.
Research Fields Surface X-ray diffraction, PDF analysis, stress distribution analysis, XAFS structural analysis, etc.
Apparatuses Apparatus for X-ray stress measurements and X-ray imaging
Apparatus for high-brilliance XAFS measurements

SR Source In-vacuum twin-helical undulator
SR Energy 0.37-2 keV
Monochromator Varied-line-spacing plane-grating monochromator
Characteristics This soft X-ray beamline has the world's highest level of energy resolution in this energy region, and can perform precise analysis of electronic and magnetic structures. The downstream part of the beamline is installed in the RI building, and uranium compounds and other interesting strongly correlated substances can be used as samples. The energy resolution at the sample position is E/ΔE > 10000.
